1. America is good
OK, wait a minute. Are you talking about America the nation, America the concept, America the government, America the history, America the people, America the foreign policy, America the world’s policeman, America the geographic features, or what? Glenn Beck, this is pointless propaganda. This statement, if meant to include every aspect of America, is easily proven to be false and by starting out your ‘ Principles’ with a patently false and intellectually void statement you prove that you are dissembling. Your statement is false, it serves to divide rather than unite. The division? Those who suck up mindless pro-American propaganda (your phony ‘patriot’ crowd) and those of us who actually have eyes and can see.
If you were trying to unite, you could have stated something like ‘America has great potential and we should all pull together to help our nation realize this great potential’. Or how about ‘My number one goal is to help Americans work together despite differences to realize the dreams of our Founders’. But NO, that’s not your intention. Your first intention is to increase your power as a demagogue, second is to make money, and third is to help the Mormon fundamentalists replace the American government with ‘The Priesthood’ of the Mormon church.
Let’s take your statement at face value, then I’ll expand on your real goals just mentioned. ‘America is good’. Well, Glenn, no, it’s NOT good. In fact, it’s not even passable. Poverty, sickness, murder, infant mortality, literacy, economy, standard of living, soundness of infrastructure, level of public discourse, and a host of other indicators are going the wrong way. Our economic system is a couple of shocks away from a depression. Real unemployment (including underemployment) is near 20%. The government is corrupt, strapped with the perplexing potentially sinister problem of Executive Branch overreach after 8 years of Bush’s imperial “unitary” Presidency. These problems are directly due to 30 years of GOP wealth redistribution, cronyism, and outright lying.
Take poverty for example. Poverty has increased markedly in the last 4 decades (since 1970), especially in the last 8 years, and especially extreme poverty. Extreme poverty is when you are at or below 50% of the poverty line. Of course, the poverty line itself is highly controversial because in some parts of the country you would have to eat out of garbage cans to stay alive at that income level. So what’s so ‘good’ about approximately 45 million Americans living in squalor in the richest western democracy? I guess it’s good for the top 1%, who according to Paul Krugman, now control as much wealth as the bottom 95%. Yeah, it’s never been better for them.
Health Insurance Crisis
We are embroiled in a national debate on health care reform and Glenn Beck is on the wrong side of the debate. Big Insurance, Big Pharma, Big Health have colluded over time in the most gigantic price-fixing scheme ever. The insurance industry fights with tools that ordinary men and women (who Glenn Beck claims to champion) never had or will have at their disposal. They can charge you whatever premiums they want without fear of competition and then use your own premium dollars against you. They buy politicians with huge campaign contributions (see lifetime contributions to Senate Finance Committee members) There was a report that Big Health was spending $2.4 million per day in July/August 2009 to defeat health care reform that actually reforms anything. Some of this was spent to advertise against health care reform, some spent on phony paid “grassroots” movements financed by highly paid PR and lobbyist firms. They can even hire lawyers to defend themselves if you ever tried to fight them over a denial or rescission of your coverage.
There is clearly a battle going on between corporate interests who comprise 1/6 of the nation’s economy and the rest of us. The corporate interest is profit and growth. They are willing to defend this at any cost, including the cost of human life. A 2009 study to be published in the December issue of American Journal of Public Health concludes that lack of health insurance causes 44,789 deaths per year. How can “America be good” when we allow people to die, many of them slow, agonizing deaths, because they can’t afford health care?
Why does Glenn Beck side with the insurance companies against health care reform when an estimated 40 million Americans can’t see a doctor when sick unless they go to an ER? Does he really believe it when he creates the false argument that any health care reform that involves the government compares to the Nazis eugenics program? On August 6, right before the recess and town halls started, Beck said on his radio show:
… How did the T4 program start in Germany? It started through compassion, and it started because we needed to get control of the costs. So first they emptied out the sanitariums. They emptied out all the people who had dementia, they emptied out all the people who were handicapped and living in hospitals, then they started going after the babies. Any baby that was born that was crippled. Then they started weeding out all the cripples in between. Then, believe it or not, I can’t believe I’m making this statement, then it got ugly.
Well, some believe that the idea of eugenics got ugly before they started gassing Jews and homosexuals. Some believe it got ugly when they started cleaning out the sanitariums. When they first started to seriously have the conversation “Well, we can’t really afford them, wouldn’t it be better if they just died?”.
We have quotes. Not ancient 1960 quotes, the oldest one we have is from 1995, and some of them have been written or said this year, by people who are advising this President on health care and they are the value of babies versus a 15 year old, the value of a 25 year old versus a 65 year old. Please, dear God, read history. Please, dear God, read the truth of what these people have said in their own words, and ask yourself this one question. “Do you trust these people enough to give them control over who lives and who dies?” Because that’s what health care is. When you have no other choice but to go to the state, they decide who lives and who dies.
And there is no recourse… you can’t sue the Federal government. There’s no recourse. There’s no, there’s no watchdog. They are the police officer they are the watchdogs. And when I give you these words, and I show you the words from the people who led the American progressive movement, as Hillary Clinton would say, “Those very progressive Americans from the early 20th century”, when I give you the words of these people, and compare them with the words of the people currently in the White House advising our President on health care, you tell me, you tell me how comfortable you are that in time, with a system like this, with people advising him like this, you tell me that feel comfortable that things don’t go wrong at some point, and they say “Well, we don’t want to terminate grandma’s health care, of course we don’t want to not provide health care for that newborn, but we have to. And really, they’ve lived a good life”, or, “Uhhh, that child,” they will say EXACTLY what doctors said about my 21 year old daughter, “She really may not have a quality of life, she may not walk, or talk, or feed herself, but then again, miracles happen”. The then again, miracles happen, <chokes up> excuse me, the then again miracles happen part of that will be left out of the conversation. Then I will not be able to see my daughter’s 21st birthday where I can reflect with her how miracles do happen. Because really, as I was told at the beginning of her life, well, “What kind of quality of life is she really going to have?”
I don’t know, but that’s for God to decide, not the government.
Seriously, Glenn Beck, you put words in Hillary Clinton’s mouth implying that she said the Nazis were “progressive”? Seriously, Glenn Beck, you claim that health care reform will empty out the sanitoriums, end health care for babies with birth defects, turn people with dementia out into the street, and “weed out cripples”? Do you REALLY BELIEVE this or were you just trying to stir people up to act against their own best interests? I can’t tell which it is, but in either case you are a self-serving liar, and insane to boot.
And then you claim ‘America good’. Some of the very things you despise from the Nazis are happening daily in our current health care fiasco. When people get sick, have their insurance rescinded, lose their job due to illness, and then end up out on the street due to bankruptcy, what KIND of ‘good’ is that? Nazi good? Reagan emptied out the sanitariums and now many of those people, including US military veterans, live on the street, under bridges, in cardboard boxes. That’s Glenn Beck’s world, see what you want to see, ignore the facts, and then create a phony argument about Nazis. No wonder people were showing up at town halls, carrying guns, Nazi symbols, pictures of Obama marked up as Hitler, signs with nonsense written all over them. Glenn Beck told them to. Are you proud of this, Glenn Beck? Is this the “good America” you see?
For the last 50 years the US has kicked the rest of the world (with a few exceptions) around like a tin can and millions of lives have been lost by our foreign policy fiascoes. Viet Nam, Iraq, Afghanistan, Iran, the Middle East, and Latin America have all fallen prey to American interventions ranging from assassination to all-out invasion and war.
The invasion of Iraq was clearly illegal and based on a pack of right-wing lies, just like the ones Glenn Beck tells daily. Phony claims of WMD, links to al-Qaeda, and Iraqi threats to the US were pushed on America like a fear drug by the Bush Administration. The Bush Administration knew that Iraq was no threat to the US; but they have oil and since some ‘genius’ neocons thought that it would be a good idea to build an American surrogate nation next door to Iran, they invaded. Where were you, Glenn Beck, on the Iraq War? Cheerleading right along with the best of them, feeding the pro-war noise machine with the best of them.
Of course nobody would dare to agree with Reverend Wright, scholar, and UCC minister, when he said the following:
If Obama wouldn’t stand up for him, I wouldn’t expect Glenn Beck to stand for him either. Of COURSE you wouldn’t, Glenn. In fact, if you ever watched this video you’d probably start drinking and drugs again, because it’s TRUE and you KNOW it’s true, even from your cracked up mindset you can see it. ‘America is good’- Glenn Beck, noted idiot.
How can you take Glenn Beck seriously when he says ‘America is good’? What’s good about it, Glenn, to make you say that in a blanket statement? I’m actually surprised that you would say ‘America is good’, Glenn. It’s run by a government you hate, a black President you despise, a Speaker of the House you want to murder. Our cultural icons are all lefties, including Michael Moore (who you fantasized about strangling) who has a brand new movie coming out that is going to kick the capitalist system you love so much firmly in the ass. Gay marriage (which you abhor) is now legal in 4 states and more are on the way.
So what’s so good about it for you, Glenn Beck, besides your big fat paycheck? Which, by the way, since 64 advertisers have boycotted your show may not keep coming. What would the airwaves and cable system be like without Glenn Beck? Is it OK for me to fantasize about that? Maybe America wouldn’t be ‘good’ yet, but it would be a damn sight better.
Deconstructing Beck’s ‘America is Good’ statement
As I mentioned earlier, Glenn’s real agenda for trying to brainwash you that ‘America is good’ falls into 3 categories. First, by making this statement, he is assuming the sale that he is an authority figure to make judgment on whether or not ‘America is good’. I say he’s not, and if you read the rest of his ‘ Principles’ in the context of what he actually SAYS AND DOES, you will see exactly why he is no authority on the subject. The fact is that he’s a dry drunk and drug addict, and has no formal education other than barely passing high school. His world view ebbs and flows with the Republican platform but he claims to be Libertarian. (Note to self: try to pin down Ron Paul as to whether or not he shares the views of Glenn Beck.) So Beck is no position to say ‘America is good’ any more than Osama bin Laden is in a position to say ‘America is bad’. What kind of a dunce would make either of those statements? America is good AND bad.
Glenn Beck’s second goal in saying ‘America is good’ is to make money. He knows that there are millions of Americans that will eat that crap up and help to keep him high in the TV and radio ratings. They will pay big bucks to hear him speak and go to his movies and buy his books. The conservative noise machine appeals to a small percentage of Americans but they become loyal and unthinking listeners when they hear somebody stroke them in the media. Glenn Beck wants to cash in while he can. Becoming an uber-patriot hero who hunts down liberals is just what keeps the mind-numbed dittobot crowd happy. Glenn is using his phony patriotism shtick to attempt to make money, lots of it, an estimated $18 milion a year.
Third, Beck has another agenda that is not very politically correct to discuss but I feel it has to be examined. Glenn Beck is a fundamentalist Mormon. The Mormon church has a political agenda for the US and long-term it doesn’t involve the US Constitution so much. Instead, the government is supposed to be replaced by ‘The Priesthood’. According to former Mormon Janis Hutchinson,
The Mormon Church, through its political organization, the Kingdom of God, says John J. Stewart in Joseph Smith the Mormon Prophet, plans on gaining a political stronghold in the U.S. government. The goal is to ‘bring the United States Government under the rule of the priesthood.’
Some former members of the Church have claimed that there is a secret organization within the Church with its own agenda. This is a very controversial topic and I am certain that all Mormons do not support Beck as he is an appalling embarrassment to anyone who has Christian inclinations. In fact, there is a blog where a LDS member has asked the Mormon Church to distance themselves from Beck. However, the LDS Church has not yet made an official statement about Glenn Beck, so their silence on the topic indicates that they are in concurrence with his positions, outrageous stunts, outright lies, character assassination, death threats, and whatever else he cooks up in his sick, perverted mind.
So, to all of you Beckerheads who believe that the phrase ‘America is good’ coming from the piehole of Glenn Beck has any meaning, it doesn’t. It’s a way for him to make money. It’s a way to divide America so it can be conquered from within. It’s a way for him to get you to wrap an American flag around your midsection and rally around the idea that too many Blacks, Chinese, Mexicans, Vietnamese, Muslims, athiests, and so forth are now in your midst. And it may give you some kind of cheap thrill to listen to a madman, but it doesn’t mean SQUAT.
