Deconstructing Glenn Beck Lies

Demonizing Soros, Beck’s New Cottage Industry

with 26 comments

In the world of media, the most important thing to a radio or TV shock jock is the ratings book. In Beck’s case, since he brings in almost ZERO net advertising revenue due to the Beck boycott, this is critically important because the only rationale for keeping him around is that he holds people from the previous show to the next show. If this is falling apart, so is Glenn.

As reported earlier, Glenn lost almost a 3rd of his demographic compared to October 2009 even in an election year. This means that his attacks on progressives, Pelosi, Obama, and MSNBC are not holding his audience. Sooner or later one of his crackpot lunatic conspiracies has to come true or even the faithful will start to fade away. Since this shtick is failing, time to bring out the Big Guns… an all-out blitzkrieg smear campaign against George Soros.

George Soros, philanthropist, realist, socialist

Glenn Beck's fantasy now revolves around the idea that this man is taking over the US Government

Glenn Beck has spent most of this week attempting to link George Soros, Hungarian-American philanthropist, with the following evil, James Bondish conspiracy plot. The 5 point plot follows below.

UPDATE 11/14

Glenn Beck appeared on Bill O’Reilly’s show on Friday to explain and discuss this plot, which is according to Beck the most dangerous threat facing America today. The video is below with my comments.

1. Establishing a shadow government that REALLY controls the US and this conspiracy goes back to Students for a Democratic Society. (wow) Also Bill Ayers (Weather Underground & university professor), and the Open Society Institute, a philanthropic worldwide organization that promotes democracy, education, and health. Also included in this shadow control are MediaMatters (LOL) and Huffington Post (ROFL… Roy Secroft can’t even tie his own shoes without drooling on them). Beck never says how this shadow government controls anything. Seriously, Glenn. What agencies are they going to control? Name them, name who is control and what they are doing that can even remotely be construed as “taking control of the US government”. If you mean governing, i.e., making decisions about public policy, such as auto safety, clean air, military spending, and so on, that’s what we pay them to do.

2. Controlling the airwaves… somehow Beck thinks that helping fund NPR is “controlling” the airwaves. Holy Tabernacle of Mornoni, BatBoy! Clear Channel, Sinclair, and Fox News Corporation control the airwaves. Everyone knows that, don’t they? Doesn’t Glenn know that? How could he NOT know that? He’s been in broadcasting for 25 years.

Killing NPR has been one of the right-wing mantras since the Newt Gingrich “Contract With America” Congress came to town. What they did was they threatened to de-fund the Corporation for Public Broadcasting unless they became more “fair and balanced” to the GOP. Sometimes there IS no balance, there’s just the simple fact that the GOP is stealing us blind. The result of Gingrich’s threat was that Corporation for Public Broadcasting’s media outlets, NPR and PBS, took a sharp turn to the right. They supported the invasion of Iraq, for example, by under-reporting or ignoring the factual stories that went contrary to the Bush Administration. Reminder to CPB: if you don’t do it, who will?

UPDATE 11/19/10

I got curious about the actual state of the media so I did a little more research. I found a nifty page done as a project for a college class and I thought you might find it interesting. I tried to contact the author of the page, but she must have graduated. She admits that the page is incomplete, and I was trying to find out if she would consider spending a bit more time to update with information about the radio biz, which is mostly missing from this chart.

3. Destroying the state by making kids hate capitalism and encouraging Obama to rule by Executive Order. This is such an idiotic, blatant lie that you’d have to be high on something to even say it. The king of Executive Orders is George W. Bush, who wrote them by the hundreds.

OK here’s the score on Executive Orders. Bush wrote 291 in 8 years, which is an average of 36 per year. Obama has written 65 in 2 years, for an average of 32 per year. But it’s not only the number of executive orders, it’s the content of them. Bush wrote executive orders that nullified federal law and the Constitution. He wrote signing statements that stated that he was planning to violate or would not be held accountable for violation of the very law he was signing. Now that’s wielding executive power. Obama’s idea of executive overreach is to tell the Justice Department to leave Bush alone, or ask the GOP members of Congress if it’s OK that they agree on something now and then.

For a fascinating look at what both men have been doing (or have done) with Executive Orders, visit the National Archives. Each Executive Order is cataloged by subject and the full text of each one is there. Some of it is trivial stuff; some not so much. The easiest way to get there is through Google; use the search phrase “ number of executive orders”. Here are links to

Bush Executive Orders

Obama Executive Orders

4. Provoke an election crisis by seeding the system with Secretaries of State who will try to disrupt elections in the future, that is, assuming they get elected or appointed. LOL, Glenn Beck’s career was saved by Florida Secretary of State Katheryn Harris who did the chicken dance as a night club singer and threw the 2000 election to George W. Bush. Does Beck really believe that someone is plotting to make this happen again and again? How far would a cadre of Soros-appointed Secretaries of State get against the Roberts Supreme Court? Funny stuff. Further, this plan relies on voter fraud, a favorite white-man GOPER whipping boy. There is no voter fraud problem. No GOPER has ever proven that there is, if you know of a single court case in the last 30 years that doesn’t involve Ann Coulter, please let us know.

5. Seize power. I am not exactly sure how they do this one. I think they get Mitch McConnell, Jim DeMint, Eric Cantor, Steve King, Chuck Grassley, Rand Paul, Michelle Bachmann, and all of the rest of the GOP Becktards that control half of our Legislative Branch to sign a paper that says

We’re never going to vote ‘no’ again, in fact we’re all going to be socialists and bow down to Hungarian Bazillionaire George Soros. Further, there won’t be an endless stream of motions from the floor to impeach Barack Obama over the ‘birth certificate’. We PROMISE.

This is what Beck has been screaming about for the last 6 months? That he’s going to “expose” Soros? Sweet Baby Jesus. Even the most serious Beck fans have to be wondering what the hell is rattling around in his goofy skull. How the hell is any of this stuff even remotely related to a practical plan to turn the US government over to the “socialists” and “Progressives”?

You know, I’ve been watching Beck for a year now, but this has GOT to be the most off-the-wall scrambling to save his ratings that I’ve ever heard. It’s obvious that his demonizing “progressives” wasn’t working.; Too vague. Nobody really knows what that means, and he keeps talking about dead people from 100 years back and nobody really knows history, especially Beck. So why not shift the focus of blame to something more immediate, like, say, George Soros? Beck says that Soros helped put Jews in the gas chambers! Wow. I guess all the Jews should love Glenn Beck for revealing that!

I keep saying this… each new twist is crazier than the last one. Beck is a dead issue, he’s just not aware of it yet.

Update 11/11/10:

The Beckapalooza Show went and stepped in it this time. It turns out that instead of the Jews being happy about him exposing Soros as part of the gas chamber plot during WWII (when he was 14 years old), they’re furious about it. No matzo ball parties for you, Glennie. Instead, the Anti-Defamation League is condemning Beck for his made up bullshit. It’s time that he got called out for what he is… an abject liar on the way out who is scrambling to make his ratings card.

Beck and O’Reilly Talk Up Glenn’s Theory About the Destruction of America by George Soros Et. Al.

If you have any sensitivity to the smell of freshly-excreted cow flop, I recommend you do not watch the following. Also, do not watch this if you are high on nitrous oxide. See comments below.

At :16 Bill calls Beck “the G man” (implying what… FBI?) and also refers to Soros as a “radical left guy”. No, Bill, Soros is a socialist. You’re confused, you think all socialists are radical, because we believe in such far left ideas as 100% voting, health care fore everyone, public libraries, and NPR. (Ooo, scary!)

At :24 the camera pans to Beck who is sitting there with a grin/smirk that makes him appear like he needs a straitjacket.

:40 Bill wants to know what the “headline” is for anyone who might have missed the show (pfffffft!). Here’s Glenn’s response: “What you’re seeing happen, um, and what is coming between the inflation in the grocery stores and the gas pumps, um, the, um, organizations out in the streets, um , it’s a puppet show, it’s a puppet show, it is, it is orchestrated by George Soros. ”

Wait a minute. First of all, food prices have seen moderate increases in the last 6 months, still groceries are only 1.4% above the Consumer Price Index.
Fuel prices are up slightly, which is still within 25 cents per gallon of prices in May 2009. So what organizations are in the streets, exactly, and what are they protesting? OK, let’s hear Glenn explain how this is all being manipulated by George Soros.

To Bill O’s credit, he asks him the direct question at 1:08. ” So let’s take the prices first. So your theory is, that the rising prices, and the rise in food commodity prices is directly attributable to Mr. Soros.”

1:18 Glenn: “Oh yeah, ah, Mr. Soros, um, um, along with allies and, and, he’s created a shadow government which we outlined, um, and really, um, in, in, his own words, the shadow party is something that he did, the shadow party conventions back in 2000.” Not really, Glenn. The Shadow Party thing is based on a widely discredited book by Richard Poe which claims that millions of dollars of Democratic Party campaign contributions were siphoned off into George Soros’ pocket. It is totally absurd, totally undocumented, and just another outright lie.

1:30 Glenn: “… um, and so he and his allies believe there should be a New World Order.” Who was it that first used the phrase “New World Order”? Wasn’t that, hmmm, lemme think.; Hmmm,

Oh, yeah! That was George H. W. Bush, noted NEOCON, the natural enemy of socialists like George Soros, talking up how the world was going to be run by a puppet-like UN dominated by the US. Yeah, but now suddenly the New World Order people are socialists! Damn!

1:37 Glenn: This is an organization that George Soros has been putting together for years, in his own words…

1:50 O’Reilly: He’s got the Open Society Organization, and he’s got all this other business that he finances…

1:50 Glenn: Right. $500 million dollars to some of the most radical leftist organizations…

1:54 Bill O’Reilly: There’s no doubt, there’s no doubt.

1:55 Glenn: The guy who runs that “philanthropy” for him, and picks everybody, was the creator of SDS.

OK, stop stop stop. Glenn, I’m calling bullshit on you until you name names and detail exactly what part they had in the original Weather Underground and what their job description, budget, and organizational branch is like. Saying that somebody used to do this or that is bullshit unless you can prove it and explain it. Saying that he runs a $400 million philanthropy budget is absurd beyond belief. Anyone? Do you know how much money that is for one person to administer?

Glenn and Billo articulate another spew of RWNJ platitudes, mainly about how the socialists are so rich (hey, I could use a few $ over here) and how they want to destroy the US government. One question, sirs: Since the John Birch Society is dead and gone, radicals like Cleon Skousen and Ezra Taft Benson, former Mormon nutters, again dead, discredited. Why has the supposedly powerful progressive New-World-Order-expousing left wing been unable to turn this into a bigger version of Cuba? Why is it that the right wing nuts have been proliferating like rats and getting more and more radical every generation?

It’s because the left-wing conspiracy theory is just Mormon mythology. It’s used to scare people into hating social justice, unions, state institutions, of course, into line. If you step out of line as a Mormon, you’re done.

More on this later. I will try to get through another minute of this tape tomorrow. Good gawd it gets ugly.

Thanks to Jon Stewart

we have a complete explanation of the attack on Soros. Glenn Beck is actually working for Soros. His mission is to destroy Fox News through Glenn Beck.

This all makes perfect sense if you think about it.

  6. An absolutley brilliant piece – Beck’s Soros obsession and his brainwashing of fans who now believe that anyone who disagrees with Beck is a Paid Soros attack dog (I’m still waiting for my check – lol)is not just paranoia but a dangerous program of division – as was said, tyranny will come wrapped up in the flag – American meet the first stage of tryanny – his name is Glenn Beck.
His is the worst case of projectionism – everything he says about Soros is what Murdoch is doing – it’s what Jon Stewart said – the whole “Squirrel” ploy – throw the biggest diversion ever and it will be too late when the real culprit is unmasked.

  7. I believe we are seeing the light at the end of the tunnel with Beck, though. His 8-28 rally to “restore honor” was NOT the red meat his fans were looking for. Mormons and Fundie Xtians have theological differences and long-standing distrust of each other that Beck can’t heal. He’s not the first to try, and these groups may temporarily coalesce for a conservative wedge issue but they are largely divergent.

With his ratings drop, and with this Soros absurdity (did you watch the whole video? Astounding!) I think he’s getting ready to leave Fox with the martyrdom of some made-up health issue but will still bravely come back on via satellite from his home/book-churning factory to comment on Faux as they deem necessary.

The people that got shafted the most, in my opinion, are the 9.12ers. Off the bus with you!

    Thanks for the comment….

  8. Is reason for @GlennBeck's anti-Soros conspiracy freak-out a result of his falling ratings?

  9. More substance free wild accusations by Wexler. Note that he does not deal with Beck’s facts directly, he doesn’t refute them at all. What does he do instead? Call Beck names and throw a few “Look what Bush did” redirects out there…..

    Lame stuff Wexler.

  10. Sorry, we don’t refute his “facts”? Take a look here:

Disprove a single thing on there, and we’ll remove it. Hell, we’ll give you a medal. Good luck.

Oh, wow, and you linked to us on your fruity little “newspaper”! Thanks for the hits we’ll get from the 7 people that ever go there!

  12. You are an unfriendly. You post the same garbage every post, and it’s never anything specific about the website, it’s more like “I rule, you suck”.

What a moron… typical right wing idiot so brainwashed that if Rush Limbo told you to pee your pants you’d ask him “All at once or one teaspoon at a time.”

    That’s why.

I’m asking you to stop spamming my website.

This is the only time I will ask.

  13. Dude, we’re not afraid of being challenged. We’re ANNOYED of being SPAMMED. You want to give us a challenge? Put us up to a debate? Great! Call us on our (nonexistent) lies! But a string of baseless insults is completely useless. We’ve let 3 of your identical comments up already, and you’re through. Come back with something that a SMART person might write, and I’ll put it up. Deal?

And, for the record? I don’t think we CAN ban IPs from posting. Maybe Wexler knows something that I don’t.

  14. Yes, we can.

    Ban IPs, that is.

I save it for the worst of the worst. In the ban message the reasons stated are 1) failing to live up to our website’s standards (like being a cheesedick), 2) spamming, or 3) being a member of a militia or Patriot group. It’s sort of like Gitmo for the right wing. Except it’s just a concept instead of a real place.

Coralville Currier is a moral and intellectual cheesedick and that’s where it belongs.

I don’t mind having a discussion or argument (see my last comments to Mr. Misanthrope). I will even spend a certain amount of time on fools to see if they can be reasoned with. However, in this case, we have people playing with their own poop. EVERY single comment is “you just suck, you’re liars”. They continue to attack this site on theirs even though we have not mentioned them at all since the 8-28 “Rally to Restore Honor”. So what’s their major malfunction? They want to fight? OK, fight, but it’s on your dime, Thayer, not mine. I am not going to send you any business nor grant you any bandwidth to host your tripe. Thayer thinks he can increase traffic to his commercial site by getting bounces from us. Tsk tsk.

They makes a lot of noise about “no spin”… when everything that comes out of their shitty brain is unsubstantiated right wing garbage with spin. Ohh, the Progressives! That gadddam Teddy Roosevelt! Pure-D nonsense.

It’s like watching Glenn Beck’s buttboy on crack.

PS to the Coralville Courier: You’re not going to start crying on me, again, are you?

  16. Oh, aren’t you cute. Why don’t you go ahead and “refute” something without being a hypocrite and/or liar, and we’ll see just how quickly I can prove all of your points wrong. After I get done rolling my eyes, that is.

    27 Nov 10 at 8:10 pm

  17. Also, I did refute your last batch of “factual” points. I LOVE how you come back with a fresh hypocritical insult instead of defending your flawed arguments! Right-wingers are so fun!

  18. He’s just trying to get back links to his crappy little corn servative website. He’s not “sick” of spin, he’s sick, and he spins.

Quinn… I wouldn’t put up any more of his comments unless they have content. And I think you’d agree that he doesn’t deserve a back link. They are a commercial site that doesn’t need to be getting any help from us. They’ve got the local Ford dealer to help them out.

  19. Seriously though, it really bothers me that people on America’s so-called “left” look up to Soros. Soros is a currency speculator, who made his money based on the misfortune of others. If you ignored his bogus “philanthropy”(you want to meet a philanthropist, go introduce yourself to someone who works at Wal-Mart), and looked at his history without his name, you would swear that this is exactly the type of robber-barron capitalist that real leftists would oppose.

Many supporters of Soros have absolutely no idea that beyond the borders of the US, the goals of Soros’ NGOs and the Bush administration were one and the same. Both supported the Orange, Rose, Denim(failed), and Tulip “revolutions” in Ukraine, Georgia, Belarus, and Kyrgyzstan. What were the results of these revolutions?

Ukraine- More poverty, women trafficking continues, more corruption, virtually no improvements whatsoever, nationalist re-writing of history to glorify Nazi-collaborators, etc. In the last election, Ukraine corrected its mistake by electing the man who should have won before.

Georgia- Helped out with the rape of Iraq, started a war in South Ossetia with Russia(really brilliant idea), actually ceded the moral high ground to the Putin-Medvedev regime in that case, and then faked a war on national television which caused panic throughout the country.

Kygyzstan- Massive corruption, unrest, and ethnic violence.

Belarus- The “Denim revolution” failed in 2006, but it’s a good thing because even the staunchest enemies of Lukashenko acknowledge that Belarus is the safest country for women and children in Eastern Europe, it fights actively against women trafficking, and it has the best wealth distribution in the region. For all this, Soros and whoever happens to be in the White House at the time accuses Lukashenko of being a dictator who should be removed.

Soros supposedly also has links to anti-Chavez groups in Venezuela.

Soros is a capitalist, but a smarter capitalist than those who back Beck. Smart capitalists understand that Keynesian economics and conspicuous philanthropy(here, take back some of the money I stole from you) are good for business. More social welfare means more disposable income for workers to buy back what they produce from capitalists. The Friedmanites and Austrian schoolers on the other hand, are delusional. They believe in the absolute supremacy of the market, the separation of market and government, and that they have amassed their wealth due to their own superiority. Everywhere they come to power, they fail.

That being said, if America is to truly have a “left”, we cannot line up behind a phony, capitalist speculator like Soros. Many American liberals simply have no idea what Soros does outside the country.

Beck peddles conspiracy theories, but if those conspiracy theories end up getting “leftists” to defend Barack Obama, or people like Soros, then they are doubly effective.

  20. Let me add one thing, as someone who has seen the effects of people like Soros up close. The fall of “Communism” in Eastern Europe was anything but peaceful or non-violent. It has led to the largest growth of poverty non-involving a war. Russia’s productivity was damaged considerably more by the break-up of the USSR than it was by WWII, when the country suffered the worst war in human history on its very doorstep. Millions of people have found themselves in some form of slavery. Neo-Nazism is wildly popular, ethnic nationalism reigns, and this ethnic nationalism led to Europe’s bloodiest war since 1939-45. Millions, if not tens of millions, have been displaced, and many more will be displaced. Entire nations such as Russia and Ukraine are literally slowly dying out, with no answer to their demographic problems in sight. Languages and cultures are disappearing.

This is the reality of the destruction of the last vestiges of socialism in Eastern Europe.

  21. I should add, however, that despite my(and many others’) justified animosity towards the robber baron Soros, what Beck said about him and the Holocaust was beyond the pale. During the Holocaust, thousands were forced into terrible situations and nightmare dilemmas, such as the Jewish Sonderkommandos at Auschwitz.

  22. Hi, Arslan, and welcome back!

The focus of my relationship with Soros and Beck is pretty much limited to the bogus conspiracy theory regarding the evil empire plan to take over America. I think most rational people understand that Soros can’t do that.

Allied with that concern is the notion of Beck stirring up crackpots who arm themselves and go out to shoot up philanthropic organizations. I realize you don’t necessarily agree with Soros’ philanthropy as being significant, however, it is real to the people it helps.

The Beck-backers are the Mormon/Christian/capitalist group who stand to benefit from low tax rates, favorable de-regulation of business interests, and a buffaloed populace. Or to put it more bluntly, the top 2%.

I am out of time for now, I may try to come back and work on your other posts later. I will approve them all now, as TGBR loves posts from all thinking people.

Thanks! And season’s greetings, whatever they may be. In my case it’s that days are getting longer, finally!

  23. Let us not forget that Soros himself is in that top 2%. In fact, he has admitted that one of the main reasons for his donations is tax deductions. So for him, whether we have Obama or Palin from 2012 onward, he still wins. Workers lose, either way.

That being said, Beck does seem to have a talent for inspiring people to shoot up obscure non-profit organizations that have nothing to do with politics. Aside from that, the Beckites’ Soros hate is quite amusing because it makes them totally inconsistent. When they whine about him, I ask, “So you think that a rich capitalist shouldn’t be allowed to invest his money as he sees fit? You think the government should restrict him? What are you, a COMMUNIST?!!” (Wait for their heads to explode).

  24. I thought that Jon Stewart did a great sendup of Beck on the topic of Soros, which is why I included it on the site.

What he left out of the puppet show was the strings connected to Beck that run back to Salt Lake City and Liberty U.

My favorite way to make religious Beckerheads’ heads explode is to start quizzing them on their knowledge of Mormonism. I’m an atheist, so most religions seem pretty silly to me. But Mormons are fraudulent cultist political hucksters. When “Christians” find out what Beck actually believes, it really throws a few wrenches into the machine.

That’s the reason, I think, why Beck is fading away. His 8-28 gambit to turn his movement religious and place himself as the mystic poobah unifier of Mormons and Xtians was a cracked idea from the start. His 9.12 Project people became the victims of Beck’s megalomaniacal ADD. The TeaBaggers were left with a serious “WTF!?!??” balloon floating over their heads.

Well, it won’t be too long before Beck has retired into the safety of his gated lair, from which he will proclaim himself to be going blind and all other sorts of maladies. It’s funny. When things like that happen to other people, the Beck crowd is quick to point out that it’s God’s retribution for their misbehavior. But when it happens to them… not so much.

  25. Fundamentalist Christians do have a hate for the Mormon Church, and so even if they were successful(the religious right), they would eventually destroy each other with infighting. I’m sure you might be familiar with an anti-Mormon evangelical video from a long time ago called The Godmakers. This is where the hilarious “Mormon Jesus” youtube video comes from.

  26. The Mormons have done a much better job of organizing than the Xtians, IMO. They won’t allow any backsliding, or they make it so damned uncomfortable that few leave the group. They reap 10% of everything the members make, and then turn around and use it to promote public policy. Their reputation among Xtians is confused; some think they’re OK and it’s Politically Correct to allow different views. Others view them as the devil’s spawn. I think they’re a fraud and I’m not even Xtain.

Thanks for bringing up The Godmakers. It should be showing at every candlelight service tonight.
