Glenn Beck and Prop 8

Dr. Glenn Beck, noted Mormon bigot, is sore about losing Prop 8 after his cult spent $32 million on it.
Second update, 8/12/10: Prop 8 decision is NOT stayed. Beginning 8/18 LGBT marriages will be allowed to resume unless an appeals court intervenes before then.
Congratulations to all who fought so hard to overturn this hideous attack on human rights, right here in America.
Update 8/12/10: The reason why Glenn Beck has been silent on Prop 8 is…. he doesn’t care about it. OR so he says. This is a highly unexpected break from his Mormon cult. People as high up in the organization as he is would not be expected to say
“Honestly, I think we have bigger fish to fry. You can argue about abortion or gay marriage or whatever all you want. The country is burning down…I don’t think marriage, that the government actually has anything to do with…that is a religious right.”
Quinlan and I have been engaged in a lengthy thread over at Liberty University’s blog. I joined a thread trying to determine why fundamentalist Christians would have a Mormon give their Commencement address. The discussion quickly turned to abortion and gay marriage which are extremely hot button issues for the fundies. Another fault line emerges.
Update 8/6/10: As reported last night on Rachel Maddow the conservative pundits have been strangely silent on Prop 8. We should have expected something from Beck by now, but perhaps he doesn’t want to call attention to the fact that his cult’s $32 million smear job has FAILED. The information in this post (donuts and M&Ms) dates back to a Glenn Beck show where Prop 8 was being “analyzed” by Beck, “attorney” Jay Sekelow, and author Jonah Goldberg, who wrote the book “Liberal Fascism” which discounts him as an authority to do anything more than wet his pants.
My partner Quinlan has written a satirical piece (previous post) about the Perry case and its ruling which overturns Prop 8. Judge Vaughn Walker stated in no uncertain terms using 138 pages that the people cannot vote away the rights of their fellow citizens. Read the full ruling below at your leisure.
Glenn Beck has made his position on Prop 8 clear, or as clear as his thinking allows. He thinks a good analogy is if the people of California decided to ban donuts and M&Ms and wanted to put that in their Constitution. According to Glenn, they have the right to put it in their Constitution, because they can put anything they want into their Constitution. So, they DID put it in the Constitution, only it wasn’t about food, it was about defining what a marriage is. Then, because people filed lawsuits to question the Constitutionality of Prop 8, the Constitution is under attack by gays and oooooo, Progressives!
I wouldn’t expect that Glenn Beck would know the difference between buying donuts and M&Ms and getting married. I do, however, think that readers of this site can clearly see that they are not the same thing. Further, putting something in the Constitution doesn’t make it sacred or legal or anything. It’s just a concept that has to be proven within the framework of other laws.
GLENN BECK FAIL
I always love it when the Teabaggers and other vermin (like the Oathkeepers) say “The Constitution is under attack”. Why? Because they are the people who are always trying to take away people’s rights! The right wing is the movement that fought against civil rights, that passed Prop 8 which takes away the civil right of marriage for LGBTs, push for totally ridiculous and incorrect interpretations of the First Amendment regarding separation of church and state, and making wild claims about what the 2nd Amendment meant when it CLEARLY states that gun ownership is necessary in the context of “a well-regulated militia”.
I have an upcoming page on the Progressive movement where I will skewer Glenn on his inaccuracy and sheer stupidity in his constant mischaracterization of Progressives. But since the topic is Prop 8, I will school Beck and his followers on how the law really works.
First off, Glenn, it is an inalienable right that every person has to choose their own spouse. This is not only a right guaranteed by our US Constitution which demands that no person shall have special rights or privileges over others. It’s also a basic human right that is recognized by many nations around the world (with a few notable exceptions. Get with it, Europe, you’d think the Frenchies would be all for it, wouldn’t you?) Correction: I should not have been so judgmental on Europe for a number of reasons, including that 7 nations protect gay marriage as a human right. Germany, France, and the UK are the exceptions. -Wexler So since it’s a right, that means that you don’t get to vote on it. It doesn’t matter what you think about it, it’s not the same thing as banning donuts and M&Ms, Glenn. We’re not talking about some hypothetical ban on junk food, we’re talking about someone’s right to marry someone they choose.
Second, it makes no sense AT ALL to assert that the “Constitution is under attack” when there is a legal challenge to it. The Constitution is a living document, Glenn, how do you think that Section 7.5 of the Declaration of Rights got there? As it happens, that restriction on the rights of California’s citizens has been proven to be illegal. That’s not an attack. It’s just the law. If anyone had the standing to say there was an attack, the LGBT community can say that they were attacked by Prop 8 and the Mormon Cult who put $32 million that they largely coerced from their sheeple into this blatant attempt to deny civil rights.
Since Glenn Beck’s Mormon Cult pumped a reported $32 million into passing Prop 8, so I’m sure that Glenn will be hacked off enough to create a series of programs that suggest that progressive gay activists are going to rape your children and make them take showers together. He’ll say that progressives will throw out all the textbooks unless they praise gay people and the “gay lifestyle”. He’ll probably make a lot of comments about gay bondage and references to anal sex. This seems to be OK with the Mormons, conservatives, and their ilk.
Well, it’s not OK, Glenn. You’re not OK. You’re just a hack on his way out. You are on the wrong side of this issue just like you’re on the wrong side of every issue. You can spin up all the conspiracy theories you like, you can sound the bogus clarion call that the world is coming to an end, you can fearmonger to your heart’s content to your scared, rabbit-like audience. You can pull in all the right-wing lawyers you want. They will make the same arguments that have been carefully and totally disintegrated by Judge Vaughn Walker in his 138 page ruling.
I know you read this, Glenn. So maybe you want to take Quinlan and I up on the debate challenge now? You effing, money-grubbing little coward. You could never have an argument with anyone without having a kill switch on their microphone.

A little harsh on the Europeans considering 7 out of 10 countries that have gay marriage are in Europe!! France, UK and Germany may not be amongst them but they all have civil partnership arrangements.
Its the so called ‘leader of the free world’ that needs to get with it, you don’t even allow gays in the military. Disgrace!

Paul,
Thank you for correcting me on this point. I was in a big hurry when I wrote this piece, and although I was under the impression that Europe was ahead of the US on LGBT marriage rights, I didn’t have time to do the proper research. What I did find was a piece on the European Convention on Human Rights. Article 12 of the ECHR doesn’t protect LGBT marriage as a human right. What I SHOULD have done is more research to determine which nations do and don’t. Thank you, I stand corrected.
Regarding Obama and DADT, I agree with you 100%. He campaigned on that issue, and it seems from the outside that he ought to be able to do something to suspend it until it’s finally repealed. However, this is statute law, not just a military policy, so it’s a bit trickier than just waving a magic wand. Bush would have probably just issued an executive order starting with “As Commander in Chief, (puff puff), I hereby declare…”. That doesn’t seem to be Obama’s style.
I remember when DADT was passed into law. In that political climate, it was an advance from the previous policy that attempted to codify standards for handling the issue of gays in the military. In 1993 when Clinton pushed for it and got it, gays were banned from military service per Reagan. So as antiquated and kludgy as it seems it still was progress.
The Murphy Amendment has been passed and is generally expected to stick a fork in DADT while granting equal civil rights to gays in the military. This is projected to happen by 2011.
Thank you for your comment.

I’ll be putting some time into it today. I have a studio project that’s getting so far overdue that I’m cringing every time the phone rings. I will still find some time for the page, it’s important.
